Research shows that giving is not only good for the recipient, but it benefits the giver as well. Giving can create a “warm glow,” activating regions in the brain associated with pleasure, connection with other people and trust. Evidence reveals that gift-giving behaviors make people produce “feel good” chemicals, such as serotonin, dopamine and oxytocin increasing these wonderful elements already present in our bodies. When reviewing MRIs of givers, the National Institutes of Health found that giving stimulates a pathway to the brain releasing endorphins creating what is known as the “helper’s high.” So, during the holiday season, when we all struggle with some “ghost of Christmas past,” finding an organization to which your family can give will:
- Lower blood pressure
- Increase self-esteem
- Decrease depression
- Lower stress levels
- Expand happiness.
Now who among us does not need these benefits during the busy and chaotic holiday season? Besides, when we share the giving spirit and its benefits with our children, we create lifetime habits with long-reaching advantages.
Pueblo’s local Toys for Tots Program has much appeal for the youngest givers in the family. What child does not like to shop for toys? Toys for Tots Pueblo is part of a national organization of the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation, a 501c3 non-profit charity. Collecting new, unwrapped toys and distributing them as Christmas gifts to less-fortunate children in the community, is the organization’s way of spreading a message of hope to these kids. The Toys for Tots program endeavors to inspire youngsters to become responsible, productive, patriotic citizens through the disbursement of holiday charity. Through Toys for Tots, Pueblo neighbors can join together for a common cause and contribute to a better future for one of our nation’s most valuable resources, our children. All collected donations are distributed locally in the Pueblo community.
Toys for Tots Pueblo is an all-volunteer organization coordinated by Marine Veteran, Freddie Gallegos, Jr. Nationally, nearly 40,000 Marines, Marine Corps League members, veteran Marines and volunteers are involved with annual campaigns. You can help by contributing new, unwrapped toys at a multitude of Pueblo locations between now and December 18. Two of the main drop-off sites are the south side Walmart on Northern Avenue and Pueblo Blvd. In the more northern part of town, Sam’s Club is also accepting donations. To find a full list of the more than 30 drop-off locations, go here.
Cash donations are also very welcome and larger donations, of a minimum of $500, are tax deductible as appropriate by your individual situation and tax laws. If you would like to make a large, tax-deductible donation, contact Freddie Gallegos, Jr. at toys-4totspueblo@gmail.com or call 719-248-3430.
Maybe you know a family who needs help and can benefit from this community resource. If so, an online application can be completed by Monday, December 18, at this link. Toys are only provided to parents and legal guardians. Extended family members are not eligible. Online applications will be processed and filled in the order they are received. Because hundreds of applications are received, it does take a period of time for any application to be processed. A representative will contact applying parents/guardians with information regarding applications. If applications are accepted, please note that Toys for Tots Pueblo requires proof of identification, such as birth certificates and driver’s license, for those picking up the children’s toys.
Please find the time to give this season and engage your children in the charitable pleasure of a “helper’s high.” Together you can make it a holiday season to remember.
