Children’s Theater and Education

By Jean Flynn Ray December 28, 2017

According to www.acttooplayers.com, theater education is vital for well-rounded youth development. Theater education offers kids the opportunity to gain self-confidence; use their imagination; establish empathy and tolerance for others; exercise cooperation and collaboration; develop concentration, communication and problem-solving skills; as well as having fun while gaining aesthetic appreciation. In a world dominated by technology, theater provides an outlet for making creative choices and thinking new ideas in expressive ways. When children work collaboratively to combine the abilities and thoughts of all participants, empathy is built for different, ages, cultures and backgrounds.

The Sangre de Cristo Arts Center, in partnership with Missoula Children’s Theater (MCT), offers a wonderful opportunity for theater education during FREE, open auditions on Monday, February 5, 3:45 PM, in the form of games. Youth in grades kindergarten through 12th are eligible for auditions and 50-60 kids will be chosen to perform in Gulliver’s Travels, a sci-fi version. Those chosen will start rehearsals immediately following the auditions in a camp format daily from Monday, February 5 through Friday, February 9, from 3:45-8 PM. Camp tuition cost is $54 for Arts Center members and $60 for non-members. Not all the children that audition will receive a part. Casting decisions are the sole responsibility of the MCT Tour Directors and roles will be announced upon conclusion of the auditions.

A public performance of this out-of-this-world version of Gulliver’s Travels will take place as part of the Children’s Playhouse Theater Series on Saturday, February 10, at 1 PM on the Arts Center’s Main Stage. Gulliver finds himself lost in space. He moves through several worlds discovering a variety of aliens and fantastical beings. Tickets are $8 or $7 for members, and are on sale by calling (719) 295-7200 or visiting www.sdc-arts.org/performances/Tickets. Come out and enjoy some family fun and support the theatrical endeavors of many kids right from the Pueblo community.
