It’s Pageant Time

Founded in 2011, the Miss Southern Colorado Style scholarship pageant was established to build and strengthen self-esteem in young people while promoting education. The 2018 pageant date is set for Sunday February 25 and will be held at the Sangre de Cristo Art Center, 211 N. Santa Fe Avenue. Applications are now being accepted for youth ages 1 -23, boys are included. The application paperwork fee is $50 per family and applications can be obtained by contacting Veronica Salaz at 719-778-3234. If you will be entering a child that is birth to twelve months, the application fee is only $25.

The $50 additional registration fee, for each participant, covers pageant readiness classes. For the wee ones birth to twelve months, the fee is only $25. Readiness classes will build skills in stage presence, interviewing, public speaking and team building. Classes will be held at Coyote Grille, 5220 Nature Center Road, on three concurrent Sundays starting January 21. The 1.5-hour classes will take place in the afternoon and start times will vary based on age categories. The age categories and potential scholarship awards are as follows.

  • Birth-12 months: $100
  • 1-3 years: $250
  • 4-6 years: $250
  • 7-9 years: $250
  • 10-12 years: $250
  • 13-16 years: $500
  • 17-23 years: $1,000

The first category birth to twelve months will allow for 15 participants. Only 25 contestants will be considered for all of the other categories combined. There will be one scholarship award for each of the categories delineated above. Award winners are strongly encouraged to utilize cash scholarship prizes for educational purposes.

Want to know who wins? Tickets for the Sunday, February 25 pageant are $10 each and available for purchase at the door. Additionally, tickets can be acquired in advance at the Coyote Grille, or from individual pageant participants. Currently, the Coyote Grille is operating on winter hours, Thursday and Friday from 12 PM-6 PM and Saturday and Sunday from 12 PM-8 PM.

According to www.thefreedictionary.com the word pageant can be defined as “any magnificent or showy display.” So, couple that with meaningful cash awards toward education and you have something that parents and children do not want to miss, whether as a participant or a spectator. It’s pageant time!
